Commission a Portrait
Pastel is an outstanding medium for achieving detail and subtle skin tones for a life-like and natural portrait. Whether formal or informal, a pastel portrait is an artwork to capture what you love about the important people in your life.
Commissioning a Portrait
Every portrait is unique and will be created for your specific requirements. The artwork may include one individual, or two or more people such as a couple or family group. Some portraits are head and shoulders, others may be full-length or have the subject seated – the option is yours.
Background detail is also optional and sometimes of considerable significance, but keep in mind that background detail will affect the price depending on complexity.
The size of the artwork may range from A5 (15cm X 21cm) to A2 (42cm X 60cm). The portrait can be full colour, monochromatic or pencil. All artworks are on a high-quality paper or board especially made for pastel medium and are beautifully presented with a mount and cover for protection.
A pastel portrait can be a treasured gift to commemorate an important birthday or to remember a deceased loved one. A range of hand-crafted vouchers are available with personalised wording for an outstanding gift of art.

Will photos need to be taken?
After an initial discussion about your portrait ideas a meeting is arranged for me to photograph the subject. The portrait is usually made from several reference photographs rather than one photograph. Where this is not possible, a selection of photographs which are clear and best represent the subject will be required and will be returned with the final portrait.
How long will the portrait take to complete?
This will depend on the size and whether a background is included. I like a minimum of three weeks to complete most portraits but am able to work to a specific deadline if required. We can discuss the time frame early on in the process once it has been established what the portrait involves.
Can we see the portrait before it’s finished?
I usually like to discuss the reference photographs and all other details before I begin to ensure everyone is happy with how the portrait will progress. I will send an image of the completed portrait for approval before delivery and minor alterations can be made at this stage if required.
Will the finished portrait need to be framed?
The artwork is done on a quality paper or board especially for use with pastel. The final work is lightly fixed and mounted with a matte and cover for protection. All artworks in pastel should be framed by an experienced picture framer. I recommend using Conservation glass or Museum glass for UV protection, maximum clarity and minimum reflection.
Is a deposit required?
A 50% deposit is required on commencement of the portrait with the balance payable on completion. Please note that the price does not include framing.
How can we receive our portrait?
The portrait can be packaged and delivered safely anywhere in New Zealand or internationally by a reliable courier service. Delivery costs will be additional.
