Commission a Portrait

Pastel is an outstanding medium for its versatility and vibrance. It is ideal for achieving detail and subtle skin tones for a life-like and natural portrait. Whether formal or informal, a pastel portrait is an artwork to capture what you love about the important people in your life.

Commissioning a Portrait

Every portrait is unique and will be created for your specific requirements. Most portraits include the head and shoulders of one individual person but can also include two or more people, such as a couple or family group. Some portraits are full-length, others will have the subject seated – the options are yours.

The artwork is done on on a quality paper or board especially for use with pastel.  It is usually a neutral colour which best complements the skin tones and colouring of the subject. Background details are often not necessary but are sometimes of considerable significance to the subject or overall portrait. Keep in mind that extra detail will affect the price depending on complexity.

It is best that we discuss your particular ideas directly so contact me at Art Loft Studio for more information and a price guide.

Will photos need to be taken?

After an initial discussion about your portrait ideas a meeting is arranged to photograph the subject. The portrait is usually drawn from a series of photographs rather than one photograph. Where this is not possible, a selection of photographs which are clear and best represent the subject will be required and will be returned with the final portrait.

How long will the portrait take to complete?

This will depend on the size and whether a background is included. I like a minimum of three weeks to complete most portraits but am able to work to a specific deadline if required. We can discuss the time frame for completion and delivery early on in the process once it has been established what the portrait involves.

Can we see the portrait before it’s finished?

I usually like to discuss the reference photographs and all other details before I begin to ensure everyone is happy with how the portrait will progress. I can also send an image of the completed portrait for approval before delivery and minor alterations can be made at this stage if required.

Will the finished portrait need to be framed?

The final work is sprayed with a fixative and mounted with a matte and cover for protection. However all artworks in pastel need to be framed by an experienced picture framer. I recommend using Conservation glass or Museum glass for maximum clarity and UV protection with minimum reflection.

Is a deposit required?

A 50% deposit is required on commencement of the portrait with the balance payable on completion. Please note that the price does not include framing.

How can we receive our portrait?

The portrait can be packaged and delivered safely anywhere in New Zealand or internationally by a reliable courier service. Delivery costs will be additional.
